Hay River Track

Travel the whole of the Hay River Track, Birdsville Track and the Oodnadatta Track, the big 3 in one tour! Only 10 days in length, so that you have time to travel to Marree and back without missing any school time.

We start this tour from Marree, arriving the day before to enjoy the hospitality of the Marree hotel. This is where you will meet your fellow travellers and talk about the exciting trip ahead. The first day out we are on the Birdsville track, with lunch at the magnificent Mungerranie Hotel, one of those iconic pubs you just have to visit at least once in your life. This is also our last fuel stop for a while, so a top up here is essential.

From here we make our way into the desert and onto the Hay River Track. Over the next few days we wind our way north through some spectacular scenery, ducking out to Lake Caroline, stopping at Dingo Well and cross the Tropic of Capricorn. At the end of the Hay River track we will make camp at Jervois station and here we can have a shower, refuel and enjoy a restful night.

From Jervois we step back in time to the gold mining history of Central Australia, camping at the Arltunga historical reserve where you have the afternoon to explore the relics, take in the beautiful scenery and another beautiful Central Australian camp. From Arltunga we will travel the length of the East Macdonnell ranges ending up at our camp spot in Alice Springs. From here the afternoon is yours to visit the Old Telegraph station, one of the museums, or relax at camp, the choice is yours.

We then start to head south, to one of my favourite destinations, Chambers Pillar. The dawn and dusk photo’s from here will light up your walls for years to come!

Another  highlight for many will be Dalhousie hot springs, whose waters vary from 38-43 degrees, just the thing to soothe the body after a week or so of travelling!

The next morning we start our run back to Marree with a two day run along the Oodnadatta track. We will stop at the pink palace at Oodnadatta, camp beside South Australia’s longest bridge, stop at some mound springs and all the while travelling next to the Old Ghan line and all of the history that goes with it.
