Northern Simpson Desert via Madigan Line Tour
We offer a Northern Simpson tour which begins in the Corner Country of NSW and travels through to Alice Springs via the historic Madigan Line for 14 adventure filled days. The Madigan Line traverses the Simpson Desert, which occupies approximately 176,500 square km in the heartland of central Australia.
This ancient red desert is large enough to cover three Australian states and territories: South Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.
This timeless land is bound to the west by the Finke River and Mabel Range, to the north by the Adam Range, to the east by the Georgina and Diamantina Rivers, and to the south by the beautiful Lake Eyre. The Simpson Desert lies on top of the Great Artesian Basin, with water from the basin sometimes rising to the surface to create areas of natural beauty.
Join Adam the night before the tour at the Tibooburra Family Hotel for a hearty pub meal surrounded by the famous artists murals and to talk about the adventure ahead.
As we head north, we will camp on the common at Innamincka to explore the local area before heading off to Birdsville via the Cordillo Downs shearing shed. We stay at Birdsville before heading for the Hay River Track and crossing the desert along the Madigan Line, which was originally carved out by Cecil Madigan in 1939. We camp on this track for the next few nights as we absorb the serenity of the desert.
We visit the old Andado homestead on the way to a hot shower at Mt Dare, enjoy Dalhousie Springs, and travel via a little used track to Chambers Pillar.
The next day, we reach Alice Springs where this tour concludes.
Why not extend your tour to enjoy all that the centre has to offer and join Adam on his Red Centre tour, another 7 days exploring all the iconic sites, including Uluru, Palm Valley, Finke River Gorge and Kings Canyon.
